Originally worn to carry perfume or smelling salts.

The  stopper unscrews to reveal a long gold applicator pin used to apply scent to the wrist or neck, a Victorian and Edwardian tradition of wearing scent close to the body. 

Mother of pearl vessel with gold tone mount and stopper.
